A debate in Westminster Hall, UK today on the Sovereignty of British Indian Ocean Territory, chaired by Daniel Kawczynski MP. Some very key issues was brought up such as the need for an internationally recognise referendum for Chagos Islanders worldwide. The vast majority of the Chagossian community wish to remain under British sovereignty, yet the UK and Mauritius are choosing to proceed with negotiations of ceding sovereighty to Mauritius. Thank you to all who participated and voiced out the Chagos Islanders concerns. We hope to see future actions from UK gov to include Chagossians in negotiations and to give us a referendum. We choose to remain British.

Henry Smith MP questions Foreign Secretary James Cleverly on his recent statement of Nov 6th 2022 on the UK starting negotiations with Mauritius on the future of the British Indian Ocean Territory. Multiple Chagossian groups in UK, Mauritius, Seychelles and worldwide have reached out to James Cleverly and Henry Smith after this statement, requesting the consultation with Chagossians regarding any negotiations with UK and Mauritius. Henry Smith MP: "In terms of consultation with the future of the British Indian Ocean Territory, the vast majority of the Chagossian community supports British sovereignty and are concerned about a potential change in status. What consultations will you be initiating with members of the Chagossian community, many of whom are residents in the UK" James Cleverly Foreign Secretary: "Absolutely recognise the strength of feeling on this. We will ensure we have conversations with the Chagossian community, as we progress with the negotiations. It would not be right for me to speculate the nature of the outcome of those negotiations, but we take their views very seriously"
