House of Lords - Ping Pong Stage - Chagos Islanders Amendment - 04.04.22 - Baroness Lister

Thank you to Baroness Lister for accepting the Chagossian amendment & Baroness Williams for summarising and affirming further discussion on additional help propsed with the potential of using the £40mil Chagossian Support Package fund for resettlement of Chagossians. Plans of a resettlement plan have been in the works for a few months now, and it is still an undecided plan but we hope this can be pushed forward by MPs, Home Office and FCDO altogether. I am very honoured once again to be mentioned by Baroness Lister for my involvement in the campaigning in Parliament, alongside David & Trent, (BOTC Campaign), and of course Chagossian Voices & of course we must not forget Alex Finch of Fragomen, and as Baroness Lister mentioned this has been over a decade of work in progress starting with the late Lord Eric Avebury in 2009. The whole team worked diligently with key stakeholders & UK Government in getting this through to where it is today. Thank you all. Rosy Leveque

House of Commons - Consideration of Amendments - Accept terms of Chagos Islanders Amendment 22.03.22

The UK Government has rejected the House of Lords Chagos Islanders Amendment based on technicalities in the Amendment. The UK Government has put forward it's own version of the Chagos Islanders Amendment, which is agreeable to the terms and demands of the Chagossian community. This Amendment will grand all Chagos descendants who can proove they are descended from a person born on Chagos Islands British Overseas Territory Citizenship and an entitlement to British Citizenship. This is a huge win for the Chagossian community. The Bill is not yet law, so we have to wait until further details are provided by the Home Office on what the application process will be and what the commencement date for the applications will be.
